寂静美丽的小山村 |
GLV has been involved in a project since earlier this year to help an area of China where there is a lack of teachers and teaching supplies for the children there. In September of this year I had the opportunity to accompany some of my colleagues to travel to this area to donate books and supplies to two primary schools. We spent four days outside of Guiyang city in a county called LiuZhi. It is beautiful country, mountainous and green with clean air though the mountains are also very rocky so it can be difficult to farm there. The people were absolutely wonderful and made all of us feel very welcome. They went out of their way to make our simple living conditions as comfortable as possible. They were always smiling and waving at us and seemed quite excited that we were there. It got very dark at night and the millions of stars in the sky were incredible.

The best part of the trip was getting to see the children and watch their excited faces as they ripped open the packages of books and other supplies we had brought. To see these little ones walking around with their new GLV bag which was reaching to their feet was precious. Some of them never let the bag go carrying it with them all day. Their eyes were luminous and they were some of the most beautiful children I have ever seen. Strong too! They could carry these packages quite easily and were energetic and lively always. They were a bit shy of me especially the little ones but I guess they had never seen blonde hair and white skin before. I just kept smiling and waving and they warmed up to me pretty soon.

On our last day we had the privilege of stocking the brand new library for the children of one of the primary schools. This school and the homes are basically in the middle of no where. It took a 40 minute ride on a dusty, rocky, winding road to reach them. The school buildings are very basic with some windows missing glass. The desks and chairs are very old and the classrooms are small. In spite of all this the children are so eager to learn. The principal built the shelving for the library and the wonderful smell of new wood filled the room. To watch these children putting the books on the shelves was just so cool. And then once the shelves were filled they milled around checking out all the books. They sat in small circles and read them at their leisure.

A former student started a volunteer teaching program in this area and many people have gone there to volunteer. Meeting some of these volunteers and getting a chance to hear about their life and experiences while volunteering in this area was very interesting. These teacher volunteers dedicate 6 months and more of their lives, and live in very simple conditions. They do this for the love of these children and understanding the importance of Education. These volunteers are of all ages and backgrounds and clearly enjoy being a part of this project.
